Theresa May has stated her walking holiday in the Alps pushed her towards zero CO2 emissions by 2050

The UK Prime Minister Theresa May has come out and informed us that part of the reason she pushed for net zero CO2 emissions by 2050 was the fact that when she went on a walking holiday in the Swiss Alps she could see the retreat of ice everywhere.

It is quite nice to hear someone in power talk about something that many of us will see in the same way that we often think. I have been on holiday to many high regions and have seen the effect of climate change – it is encouraging to find the people we have elected react to these sort of sad sights in the same way.

Unfortunately the UK, while emitting more emissions than its fair share in the world, emits far less than a country such as the USA. I think it is unlikely that we will have a similar reaction from Donald Trump as he is not likely to holiday in places where he will see these sort of effects. Given his previous demonstrations of his observation skills, it is quite likely that he would not notice the change or connect it to climate change anyway, but that is a different issue.
