For the first time since 1847 a shark has attacked a human in British waters! On this occasion it was a Blue shark that attacked the lady in question – she survived.
Shark attacks in our waters are not common. This is at least partly down to the fact that there are not many aggressive sharks that live in cold waters – generally those sharks that live in waters like ours live at a very sedate pace, as it is often harder to find much food, so the nutrients they get from each meal have to last as long as possible.
It should be noted, that while these sharks do not currently grace our waters, as our seas warm up due to global warming, it is entirely possible that they will appear. With females growing up to 3m long (males are smaller) and a female delivering anywhere from 4 to 135 in a litter, these are fascinating visitors to UK waters.
Those who go in the sea, should not be put off, this is an incredibly rare event. However, it does put a big question on activities such as that pictured below – blue shark snorkeling
