2200 polar bears live on the west coast of Greenland. It is unknown how many live on the east coast, but this group appears to be living in a place where they were formerly thought incapable of surviving.
This is because, for much of the year, this location is missing the floating ice that polar bears usually use to hunt from. These polar bears have been known about, but thought that they were part of another group.
These groups live on the steep slopes around fjords, and hunt on a patchwork of glacial ice that breaks up in the inlet. This is encouraging as it suggests that polar bears are finding ways to survive as the sea ice disappears.
