World fossil fuel production must follow by 6% year to meet 1.5°C, yet is growing by 2% a year

Coronavirus recovery money has been spent twice as fast on fossil fuel projects as it has on environmentally friendly and carbon free electricity production.

Can these become a thing of the past, soon enough to save humanity from a less gentle environment?

Why is this? Production fell by 7% during the coronavirus outbreak, but it is thought that this will make no difference to the amount of emissions by 2030.

By declining the amount of fossil fuels produced each year by the 6% required, prices will gradually increase giving alternative fuels a significant boost in income, and allowing the world to gradually move away from these harmful sources of power. Already our wind farm plans in the North sea have the potential to allow us to be exporting carbon free electricity back to Europe rather than the other way round (assuming a deal on this front is reached)

The guardian and other British newspapers, has been calling for the British government and country, and Boris Johnson in particular to take a beading role in dealing with this challenge. While he has paid lip service to this idea on occasion he has not taken up the calls with a gusto required.

Given Britain’s precarious position, caused by the Brexit vote- the market changes that we are going to have to undertake are vast. Let’s take advantage of these by rearranging our economy to be low carbon.
