Botswana

Botswana is (in some ways) the conservation big player in this part of Africa.

At total of 3 national parks, and 4 reserves cover 17% of the country.

Interestingly, because of the area of wilderness within Botswana, they have connected with reserves in neighbouring countries with great success.

A great amount of northern Botswana is part of the KAZA transfrontier national park. This reserve as a whole supports over 100,000 elephants, however, due to licenses that have been given for oil and gas exploration, this is considered a protected area in peril.

A sizable portion of South-western Botswana lies within the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, which also stretches into South Africa and Namibai.

Eiseb-Epukiro River Basin lies in the west (and north west) of Botswana, and Namibia across the border. This park is roughly 4000 square miles in total.

Finally, there is the central Kalahari national park.

As we add places in Botswana, each red zone will become clickable to visit the page on the area in question (if an area is a group of protected areas which all together form a single protected area, these will be handled in one go.
