In Columbia a bird only seen twice before – the Santa Marta Sabrewing has been seen again.
Thought to have become extinct, due to destruction of the forests that it lived in being cleared for agriculture, it is exciting to find this rare species is still in existence.
The first sighting was back in 1946, and the second in 2010. There is still hope that a population of these pretty birds will turn up, though with the shrinking tiny fragments of remaining forests, it is increasingly unlikely.
