Might this soon be the destiny of all oil barrels? This is surely where we need to be heading as fast as possible. While it is true that we have not yet found a way to remove fossil fuels from flight, Cars no longer need any oil, and while we need to improve the range of cheap electric cars, between new and second hand cars, we should be just a few generations from the end of petrol or diesel fill up stations.
In the UK electric cars, count for 16% of new cars. However, PHEV count for7.8% and HEV count for 13.4% (these two are the different kinds of hybrids. Now, while I would argue that both HEV and PHEV are far more complicated than they need to be – and it is far cheaper over the lifetime of the vehicle to go full electric. For reference, a friend has just bought a BMW plugin hybrid (PHEV) and while happy with it as one of the families 2 cars, has just made them want a true electric car in the near future (they are looking at a tesla model 3). Likewise, shipping has a number of new moves that should accelerate the the eradication, or at least large reduction of oil in shipping. A recent shipping company tried it out, and found that with the wind in ideal directions, can save 10 tonnes of oil per day. Even with less idea wind, it should save 3 tonnes of oil per day. Given that at the end of July 2022 VLSFO (the oil they use) was $900 per tonne. That means savings pf between $2700 and $9000 per day. While this is not going to be cheap, what is clear is that it is going to be required.
Unfortunately, air travel cannot yet be solved in this way, but this is a small percentage (if growing) of our emissions for transport can wait a bit for solutions.
