Ghana

Protecting a number of 21 protected areas, including 7 national parks, they are highly varied. Ghanaian records show that there is as many as 221 species of amphibians and reptiles, 724 species of birds, 225 mammalian species inhabiting Ghana; with 93 recorded to be inhabiting the Ghanaian savanna ecological zone.

The Ghana forest zones include African forest elephant (this country has no savannah elephants), chimpanzee. Smaller primates include the Potto (from the family of Lorisidae), and the Prince Demidoff’s bushbaby and the Senegal bushbaby. Monkeys found include, Patas, Green Tantalus, Campbell, Diana, Mona, Lesser spot-nosed, Olive baboon, Sooty mangabey, Ursiine Colobus, Red Colobus and the Olive Colobus monkey.

The national parks found within the country include:

  • Bia National Park
  • Bui National Park
  • Digya National Park – Found on the western bank of the Volta Lake that includes large swathes of inland estuary found 100 km to the east of Techiman
  • Kakum National Park – A coastal rainforest in the central region with abundant plant and animal life.  Located 30 km north of Cape Coast
  • Kyabobo National Park
  • Mole National Park – A former game reserve in the isolated northern region of Ghana that contains an abundant variety of wildlife. It is located 100 km to the west of Tamale.
  • Nini Suhien National Park – A small forest located in the western region near the border of Cote d’Ivoire.
