Pu Hoat muntjac (co-specific with the Roosavelt's muntjac)
The Pu Hoat muntjac is a species of muntjac only known from Pu Hoat region in Vietnam, which is bordering Laos. It is sometimes considered to be conspecific with Roosevelt’s muntjac, and its habitat and behaviour are likely to be similar.
The Pu Hoat muntjac has only been recorded once at its type locality of Hạnh Dịch Village, Hạnh Dịch Commune, Quế Phong District, Nghệ An Province, Viet Nam. The one sighting occurred in 1997. Given that this species has only been seen once, and given its similarities to the Roosevelts muntjac, it seems likely that it is not a species in its own right, or it was the last of its kind and is now extinct. Examining hunting trophies of muntjacs in Vietnam’s Pu Hoat and Xuan Lien Nature Reserve, the team found uncanny similarities to the Roosevelt specimen, still housed in the Field Museum in Chicago.
Having said this, both may prove wrong, and a thriving population may be found elsewhere in the future, who knows.
