Loango national park

This reserve is high on my list of places I would like to see, and has been for some time. Named the land of the surfing hippos by Rhett Butler, who walked from DRC to the coast of Gabon, and advised on where to put the national parks.

Apart from the hippos, Loango supports Gorillas and chimpanzees in the forests, elephants and buffalos, often seen walking along the beach, and whales and sharks in the waters along the coast (indeed in terms of whales it is considered only second to South Africa). hawksbill turtle (critically endangered), green turtle (endangered) , Leatherback turtle and the Olive ridley all nest along Gabons coast, and only the Olive Ridley is not listed as a species which regularly nests within the reserve.

Red-capped mangabey and putty-nosed monkeys are common within the reserve, making them the most common prey species for the chimpanzees of the reserve.

While not easy to see, caracals live in the park, as well as the far bigger leopard. Other species that might be more commonly known from savannah reserves, includes honey badgers, warthogs, mongoose and genets to name just a few.

Much of the wildlife, can, at different times, be seen on the beach, which apart from being an odd place to see it, it is also an open environment, often allowing unobstructed views of various forest species, that are otherwise often only seen in forest clearing (Bais).

As always, links to this destination will be added below the video, as we make them. The video is a documentary on this park.
