While this story is not exactly brand new news it is of high importance. Having recently read and written about elephant poaching within the Ethiopian borders (posted yesterday) I was...
Having a number of mammal species found no-where else in the world, and some unique habitats, Ethiopia should be high on any list of weird and wonderful places to see.
Perhaps the most interesting place is the highlands of Ethiopia which have some very unique species. In particular, Ethiopian wolves, the gelada, and the walia ibex. Below is a documentary on the Ethiopian highlands.

As you can imagine there are a variety of fascinating species within this country, including 200-300 remaining lions. These are quite different to others elsewhere and are considered a subspecies. In 2016 these lions were rediscovered, having been thought gone from the country for decades. Alatash National Park is in the north-west of the country on the border with Sudan. Ethiopia is where the Northern and Southern lion population meet, so it is an interesting mixing area. The Northern lion (west and central Africa, and India) numbers 1800-3300, whch despite having a large potential range, is just 10% of the Southern lion population.
Not surprisingly, given their wide range of habitats and wildlife, there is a good number of national parks and reserves (I will list all the national parks for now, but will add other protected areas in the future).
Should you operate any form of ecotourism within the country, I would be interested in working with you – do get in touch using list your wild place link on the home page (or click here)
