The most famous wildlife of this national park is the cross river gorilla, one of the 2 subspecies of the western gorilla.
Unfortunately, while the western lowland gorilla still has around 276,000 remaining in the wild, the cross river gorilla (which is similar to the mountain gorilla) is thought to just have 300.
In Nigeria, Cross River gorillas are known from three areas of Cross River State: Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, the Mbe Mountains and the Okwangwo Division of Cross River National Park. Two other Nigerian areas support Cross river gorillas, including Mbe Mountains Community Wildlife Sanctuary and Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary. I hope to add these in the future, but they will be covered separately.
Other primate species found within this reserve include species such as common chimpanzees, drills, Preuss’s red colobus and Sclater’s guenon and (in Okwangwo) another primate, the gray-cheeked mangabey, though this seems to have recently become extinct in the area.
There are at least 75 mammal species, including non-primates such as the African buffalo, Leopards and the critically endangered African forest elephants. The division may contain 400 chimpanzees, although no survey has been undertaken. The slender snouted crocodile also lives here.
There is a good video of this nationa l park, however it has been blocked from loading on other sites. Click hereto watch it in another tab.
