It is becoming more and more clear, that Trumps move to delist wolves was too soon and completely uncontrolled -perhaps by design?

I have written about issues that have arisen from the delisting of wolves in America. Given their absence from a large portion of the USA, the suggestion that they have recovered is insane. Unfortunately, putting states in charge takes the decisions of what a sensible ‘harvest’ is, away from scientists and puts it in the hands of local governors.

Wisconsin has already killed 1/3 of the wolf population based in the state. The fact is, that Wisconsin stated that their aim was to have a stable wolf population, something clearly not successful.

As you can see wolves have not been allowed to spread into currently available territory, let alone return to their historic ranges.

Biden has officially suspended Trump era drilling leases

The Trump administration gave permission for drilling in the Alaska Arctic refuge. This is a ruling that should never have been made.

Thankfully, as the Biden administration is aware that we live in the real world and that the world is warming, they recognise that as much oil needs to be left in the ground as possible. Furthermore, without the refuge, many species will be threatened with localized extinction.

Estimates are that there are 11 billion barrels of oil below the refuge – we cannot afford to release that much CO2 emissions, and the USA cannot meet its carbon reduction pledges if this oil is not left in the ground.

The arctic is warming 3 times faster than the rest of the planet. This is a common sense move, and should never have been made. Far more oil needs to be left in the ground. Many oil and gas companies face bankruptcy if fossil fuel cars and heating ends, however without it, the world is likely to become far more hostile – I do not wish to leave a world like that for my children and grand children.

The Colorado population has voted to reintroduce wolves, and how does this square with Trumps delisting of wolves in the USA

At the end of last year, the people of Colorado have voted to reintroduce wolves to the state by 2023. It should be noted that a wolf has been collared in the state in the last few months. It came from a neighbouring state, and therefore clearly wolves would return on their own eventually.

The proposal squeaked across the line with 50.4% of the vote. Now, this decision is complicated by Trumps foolish move to delist wolves throughout the USA, despite their current position. Estimates of the number of wolves in the USA when settlers arrived, range from 250,000 up to 2 million. Even if we assume the low end of the range, the current wolf population of the lower 48 states in the USA is just 6000, a number that we can safely say is at the most, roughly 2% of historical numbers.

Jair Bolsonaro is having a similar impact on environmental laws in Brazil to the impact of Donald Trump in the USA – will the effect be longer lasting?

Just like Trump in the USA Jair Bolsonaro has taken an axe to the environmental protections that Brazil has created over decades. Also just like Donald Trump, the majority of these moves have been done by Executive act. Between march and may last year, Jair signed 195 infralegal acts – and just like under Trunp these acts are thought to be only just legal and should have gone through their governmental body.

It just been uncovered: people working for trump are implanting climate denialism into scientific research

Multiple times in the last few years administration has taken a scientific report and decided to do something that completely contradicts his findings.

The most obvious of these is global warming, where it extends to the import of hunting trophies from abroad and the huge increase in the number of trophies allowed to be taken in the USA (likely to decimate wildlife populations within the country).

However having run up against this time and time again the trump administration is increasingly trying to forced all the arguments by putting in his false information into the report before it’s published.

An Insider in the interior department has been inputting the the totally discredited idea that trump has been regularly spouting- there’s an actuality extra carbon dioxide in the environment is good. Given the basis of the recent globally agreed treaties to deal with the increase in carbon dioxide emissions- and the clear need for the USA’s reduce it’s emissions given that it accounts for 25% of the world’s total, this is a clear attempt to justify abandoning its agreements.

In particular Trumps appointment who arrived early in his presidency, has continually tried to push the idea that at the current models have over-estimated the amount of warming that would occur. This is despite the data clearly stating this is not the case indeed if anything is has underestimated the impact.

The trump administration has attacked aggressively the interior department scientific outlook both in terms of studying future global warming and of studying diseases and epidemics. This second area has quite rightly come back to bite them as the Outbreak of the Corona virus has demonstrated the lack of readiness that the trump administration has for a significant illness spending in the population.

I should mention that this article was written in isolation from yesterdays article and on the basis of other articles, though it should be concerning that the Us government is both trying to make scientific papers play a smaller role in choosing what to do- and the same week an article suggesting that Trumps administration is demanding the right to change scientific articles to fit their own views before publishing.

Why is it necessary to do both? Is it clear, even to Trump, that whatever the position on scientific research you cannot be seen to continue to go against the evidence all the time? America currently leads the world in the amount of research it creates- however if Trump damages the reputation of this research and its impartiality, it could do untold damage to american universities and their world standings. This is likely to last far beyond Trumps administration- reelection or not.

Steve mnuchin makes a backhand suggestion about Greta thunberg that she should go and study economics at university

Steven mnuchin has suggested that Greta thunberg’s call for immediate fossil fuel divestment suggest that she does not know the first thing about economics and that she should therefore go and study it.

The arrogance of him suggesting that she does not know about economics is incredible. What are his qualifications for the role apart from as an entitled investment banker- the rich have had an extra large impact on the environment.

To the contrary given all of the assessments from reputable environmentalists ( possibly working on the Donald Trump Steve mnuchin will not have met many of these recently) and virtually all economic forecasts suggest that we can either spend billions of pounds changing our market now ( divesting from fossil fuels and investing in carbon neutral alternatives) or trillions of pounds doing so in the future.

It does not take a maths degree to understand that divesting now is the better option. Even had the nerve to suggest that America still leads the world in it’s moved to world carbon emissions reductions, and that all trump has done is moved the Investment of the public book and into private companies.

Forget the fact that the American Secretary of the Treasury thinks that saving billions of pounds now at a cost of trillions to our children is acceptable, or that is acceptable for him to behave in such a despicable way as to attack of 17-year old as his boss did; the simple fact is that the American government is determined to continue to operate as the worldwide pariah when it comes to trying to fight and Survive climate change, despite all studies showing that America will be hit harder than almost every other country on the planet: American citizen should take note, any alternative in the next election will lead to a better outcome, as it is clear under Trump the American government will not do what is required to look after its own people.

Alaskan polar bear refuge at greater threat from oil exploration than thought

Polar bears retreat into dens under the snow in order to have their cubs. Until recently this was an entirely sensible thing to do as these stems would survive very effectively until warm enough for the bear’s to emerge.

Trump’s EPA chief hints that the fuel efficiency requirements are going to rise

Generally any changes in rules to do with cars subsidies electric hand fuel efficiencies have only been to reduce requirements.

It is therefore interesting to see the current EPA chief Andrew Wheeler hinting that the trump administration is going to tighten the standards required to meet. Given this is only undoing a relaxation of these standards made by Trump, we can’t give him much credit- furthermore the confusion that he will have caused can the very best have confused the market and therefore will likely slow the improvement in standards.
