Bridge cameras are essentiallythe bridge between compact cameras and SLR.
Giving you a wide range of settings that you can change – allowing you to have almost as much control as with an SLR camera.
However they generally come with a significant zoom and a good low light capabilities.
This means that unless you are going to be able to use the SLR advanced features effectively you will often get better results with a bridge camera.

60x wide angle lens allows you to shoot animals close, or rapidly zoom in on animals far further away. Effective in low light as well, this gives everything you need for wildlife photography (my current camera).

Sony DSCRX10M2 Digital Compact Bridge Camera
This camera is more expensive than the one above but is also more capable. Only having an 8.3 times zoom in video, on photos this camera has a feature called clear image zoom that can increase it to 33. With 40 times slow motion and 4k video, and with good low light performance, it is a good all round wildlife camera

Kodak PixPro AZ527 astro zoom bridge camera
Giving a 52x zoom, in a camera easy to use, and coming with 16 megapixels you will be able to get plenty of detail.
QVC video but gives good overview of features.

Sony DSCH400B.CEH Digital Compact Bridge Camera – Black
63x zoom 20.1 Mp camera, it feels like an SLR but is easier to use and cheaper for you to buy. With a good view finder and 7.5cm LCD display. you get a good idea of how the picture will look before you take it.
